DayBreakDown, North Mississippi Allstars, Squint hit nightclub scene

Several rising stars in the contemporary music industry will be playing the Starkville nightclub scene in the next week.

The North Mississippi Allstars will be at Rick's tomorrow. The blues group is currently on tour in anticipation of the release of "Polaris", their third album. "The first records were building blocks," guitarist/singer Luther Dickinson reveals. "We've been thinking and talking about Polaris since 1999. We were on a three-record plan and we always knew that number three would be our most ambitious album."

"Polaris" is a significant step in the evolution of the Allstars since it is the first NMA album with new full-time member Duwayne Burnside (son of legendary blues musician R. L. Burnside). He wrote several songs for "Polaris" and encouraged a more collaborative writing process than in the past. Cody Dickinson, the biggest pop fan amongst the Allstars, contributed to "Polaris" as both songwriter and string arranger on songs including "Otay", "One to Grow On", and the title track.

The high energy rock band "Squint" is scheduled to perform at Rick's on August 27. The group also has a new album which earned them a nomination for a 2003 American Music Award even before it was released. At college radio stations, it was the #12 most added record according to CMJ's Top 20 Adds and entered the CMJ Top 200 six weeks ago, where it remains. Squint is featured on Touchtunes Jukeboxes, DMX Radio, and XM Satellite Radio. Songs off squint's new record will be featured on MTV's Road Rules and The Real World next week while they are in Starkville.

Also, Rolling Stone and Jim Beam have entered the picture. They have all signed on as supporters of Squint. Jim Beam recently awarded Squint a large grant to help with the financing of the record; and Rollingstone.com just named squint "Band of The Week." Their hard work and solid song writing, earned squint the ASCAP Plus Award in 2003.

DayBreakDown (the band formerly known as Boko Maru) is on the road this fall for the first time. It will bring its show to Starkville on August 28 for a performance at the State Theater.

DayBreakDown is a five-piece, "in your face Southern rock band" based in Oxford. This summer the band changed its name form the Boko Maru Madness because of copyright issues and the loss of bass player Tommy Turan. Newcomer John Phillips, a former Ole Miss student from Memphis, TN, claimed Turan's vacant position and hasn't missed a beat.

They are gearing up for shows like a two-night stand in Memphis the weekend Ole Miss plays there, a two-night stand in New Orleans when Mississippi State plays Tulane in the Superdome, as well as gigs in Nashville, Tenn. and St. Simon's Island, Ga.

These five blue-collar rockers believe they are about to be thrust into the Southeastern music spotlight- whether they are ready or not.
