CD Review: Squint- Tinsel Life
Straight outta Michigan came Squint...but then they moved to
Ruston and started making some noise. They released their debut
album "Beeker" and 4 or so years later have finally
released their sophomore album "Tinsel Life." It was
worth the wait!
Tinsel Life kicks off with the excellent song "Anthem for
Closure." The song is about wasting time basically with someone
of the female persuasion in Dane's past. Matt's guitar work on
this song is cool and very catchy. On the Buzz scale of 1-11 this
song gets an 11.
The next track is "Glimmer and Phrase" which starts
off with some bag pipes and comes in kicking with the power of
squint. This song could definately blow away all the garbage on
the radio and give us something good to listen to for a change.
This song gets an 11 as well.
In true Squint fashion, these guys keep the good songs coming
with "Postergirl." This is a song about the perfect
girl and how they don't exist basically. Dane is looking for a
girl and "She's got to be an angel, a perfect little angel!"
I love that part of the song. This song gets an 11.
"Unfinished" has very cool lyrics and a cool drum beat
by Tote that will stick in your head for weeks to come. This song
gets a 9 on the Buzz scale.
"Shadow Shadow" has a very cool chorus that will definately
be a fan favorite for many many squint fans. Cool driving bass
courtesy of Young Charles. This song gets a 10 on the Buzz scale.
"Quite" is a cool song that has some cool groovy guitars
that start the song and I give this song a 9 on the Buzz scale.
Well hell we're on to the next song on the CD called..."Well
Hell" ha ha, i made a joke up their, did you catch it? Okay
anyway the song is cool, not their best, but still a solid song
that gets a 9 on the Buzz Scale.
"No-Name" is a cool alternative/punk song that sounds
like it could be on the radio. It's a little angrier than the
rest of Squint's songs with the line that inspired the title "i'm
theno named bastard who dented up your heart." This song
gets a 10 on the Buzz scale.
"A Gimpse at Why" is a pretty cool song, that gets
an 8 on the Buzz scale.
"Random Caring" is a song that was remade from their
first CD beeker, and it is a lot better on this CD. This song
gets an 11 on the Buzz scale.
The final track is the title track "Tinsel Life" and
is a great closing song. The guitars are awesome, the bass is
thumping, the drums are driving and the vocals are a little more
melodic than the rest of the CD, but nonetheless, the song gets
a strong 10 for its punk overtones that are kicking.
